What you can expect from Relate

We will offer you your first appointment as quickly as we can, normally within two weeks. If at the end of this appointment it is agreed further counselling or therapy may be helpful, we will discuss with you that times you can come on a regular basis, and when this might begin.

You can usually come to see us during the day or in the evening as we operate between 9 a.m. and 9:30 p.m. during the week and on Saturday mornings.
Counselling sessions are usually once a week for up to an hour. You will see the same counsellor each week and your counselling will continue for as long as both you and the counsellor feel it is helpful.

Our counsellors are carefully selected and trained by Relate to a nationally recognised standard. They receive continuing support and supervision and have access to a range of professional consultants. In this way we maintain consistently high standards.

Counselling is a private and confidential form of help. This means that we will not give your name or any information about you to anyone outside Relate unless someone's personal safety is at risk. If you would like more information about this, please ask.

What we expect from you

We rely on contributions from clients to keep our services open to all. We expect you to pay for our services according to your income. The service you receive is not affected by the amount that you contribute. If you need to discuss how much you can pay for each session this will be with the counsellor at your first meeting.

Once counselling begins, we ask you to make sure you keep your appointments. If you have to cancel an appointment, please let us know as soon as possible, so that we can offer it to someone else. If you miss an appointment or cancel at short notice (less than 48 hours) there will be a cancellation fee to pay - we will send a comprehensive Information Booklet, that will provide more details on this subject.

We try to provide a caring, effective and efficient service. To help us do this, we invite clients to comment on their experience of Relate. You will receive, at certain points during your time with us, evaluation forms for completion.

We would appreciate you spending a few moments to complete these forms and returned to us as this enables us to maintain services that meet the needs of our clients. Relate has a written complaints procedure and abides by the codes of ethics and Practice of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP).
