Breaking Bad News

This is a one-day workshop for people who may find themselves in the position of having to break bad news. is designed to help them to feel more confident, informed and aware of the issues involved in breaking bad news.

It is designed:

  • To explore situations where distressing information may have to be communicated
  • To gain understanding of some of the thoughts and feelings aroused in both informant and recipient of bad news
  • To gain understanding of the process of loss and the tasks of grieving
  • To develop communication skills
  • Taking Charge of Your Life

A ten-session course for people who want to make changes in their lives, and are not sure where to start. You will have the opportunity to check out your life at present and look at what you want to achieve in the future. You will learn how to ask for what you want in an assertive but not aggressive way. Finally you will be make an action plan to take away with you. This course is accredited by the Open College Network.

New Life, New Challenge

A ten-session course for people who have divorced or separated from their partners. You will learn more about yourself, about how to manage the needs of family and friends, learn new relationship skills and develop confidence and self-esteem in order to be able to move on. It is also an opportunity to meet and talk to people who are in a similar situation to yours and can understand how you may be feeling.

This course is accredited by the Open College Network

Couples

This is the programme for people who are about to marry or make a serious commitment to each other. People in this situation often spend a great deal of time and energy to ensure that the 'big day' runs smoothly Sometimes this means there is little time left over to discuss issues about their future lives together.

Relate provides the opportunity for them to explore together how they are going to manage:

  • holidays
  • making decisions
  • roles and tasks
  • communication
  • conflict
  • leisure time
Counselling Skills

The counselling skills courses are designed for people who use counselling skills as part of another role, for example personnel officers, nurses, teachers, managers, helpers or carers.

You may wish to enrol on a basic counselling skills course as an introduction into this area of work if you are thinking of changing career.

All of Relate's counselling skills courses are accredited by the Open College Network and some are accredited by the Associated Examining Board. Credits can be put towards a higher award or for work opportunities.

The Relate Counselling Skills courses are also available for Solicitors and Legal Executives and provides 18 or 22 CPD points.
